There's always a conflict in life.
The great push/pull. With me, it's the love of great visual design
versus the love of the written word. I couldn't encompass both into
my career — it would have made me crazy! I chose design as my career
and the written word as a hobby. That hobby led me to my first Art
Director's Club Award.
I've always loved romance novels…I'm a sucker for happy endings! I
also love daydreaming. It was the fusion of the two that made me
want to tell stories. I joined New Jersey Romance Writers to hone my
story-telling skills. I thought it was a great organization, but
that it had no visual "identity", no "brand". The more I got involved, the more
the lack of branding bothered me. The designer and the writer in me
were at war over this.
Until...Our chapter was hosting a local conference and our group
needed to stand out from the other national chapters. The Board of
Directors approached me and asked if I’d be interested in designing
a logo that would distinguish us from the rest of the groups.
I designed the logo, and created the organization's brand. I applied
it to annual conference materials and all promotional collateral. I won
my first
Art Director's Club Award for the logo and today the brand is nationally
recognized throughout the romance-writing genre. Talk about happy
endings! The designer and the writer in me resolved their conflict
and lived happily ever after.
Although I've never been published, writing is still my favorite
hobby.
